As a stage theater performer can attest, a solid dark background serves as a dramatic backdrop to the star performer. Whether round or square, black or other dark-hued plates allow the finished dish to become a shining star.
Go Beyond Traditional White
When it comes to traditional tableware there are no shortage of options. Here we're referencing the plates that are not the fancy China that sits in the cabinet. Beautiful plates should be used year-round, because why not? But because they're being used year-round they should also be durable as well as beautiful.
Porcelain plates are fired at the highest temperatures and is one of the most durable materials. They can be used in the oven up to 500 degrees and are fine under the broiler along with being dishwasher and microwave safe. Dark-hued plates may not always be available in porcelain so look for China before stoneware or earthenware--the latter two are considerably softer.
The Case for Both
Often when putting together a full tablescape for a small gathering to a large special occasion, it may appear that it is geared toward white plates and in many cases this may be true. Table runners, chargers and even candle accessories may have been designed to coordinate around white plates, and more traditionally, round white plates. In some cases the white plates may be suitable but often the mind's eye craves something dark colors, specifically black, to reset visually. That's why black picture frames are important in a room--they provide definition. On a table the black plate can serve that same visual purpose.
